Andrew Bassett

Head Of Cellular And Gene Editing Research, Wellcome Sanger Institute

Andrew leads the Cellular and Gene Editing Research group at the Wellcome Sanger Institute, which develops novel genome editing techniques, cellular differentiation and cellular phenotyping systems especially with respect to high-throughput investigation of gene and non-coding regulatory element function. These include CRISPR screening techniques such as SNP mutagenesis, recombinase mediated overexpression screens, base editing, dual guide libraries which are coupled to complex phenotypic readouts such as single cell transcriptomics, spatial genomics or phenotypic assays of cellular function. He has a particular interest in the genetic causes of neurodegeneration, especially Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Motor Neuron Disease. His group employs these screening methodologies with both natural and CRISPR-induced variation in human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) derived neurons, astrocytes and microglia to identify the genes involved and understand the consequences of genetic mutatio
