Eric Geertsma
Technology Development Group Leader, Mpi-cbg
Eric Geertsma is a membrane biochemist investigating the molecular and cellular mechanisms that govern solute transport across biological membranes. His lab combines structural and functional approaches to understand how membrane transport proteins work, how their activity is regulated, and how they contribute to solute transport in complex physiological environments such as cells and tissues. Eric completed his PhD in Membrane Biochemistry at the University of Groningen, where he studied membrane protein function. During his postdoctoral research at the University of Zurich, which was supported by long-term fellowships from FEBS and HFSP, he shifted his focus towards the structural biology of membrane proteins. A research stay in the Steyaert laboratory introduced him to single-domain antibodies (nanobodies) as powerful tools for studying and controlling protein conformations. Eric leads a Technology Development Group at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics
