Ruth Hughes

UK based artist Ruth Hughes creates modern abstract hand embroideries that often focuses on geometric shapes, 3D textures and exciting colour combinations. She has been developing her unique abstract style since learning to embroider as a child. With a background in Fine Art and Textiles, and taking inspiration from patterns found in nature, plants and landscapes her work explores sharp lines against soft shapes. She translates this into her abstract designs using a variety of stitch techniques, an exciting mixture of threads and layered stitches to create interesting textures. Following a free-flowing approach to design, each piece she works on develops naturally, guided by the fabric and materials. The design grows organically as she builds texture, depth and shape, allowing the threads to dictate the design with each stitch.
